Gaia Power in the Tees Valley
- Stockton Borough Council is committed to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 8.75% below the 2000 baseline year by 2012. The use of renewable, non fossil fuel energy sources such as from this proposed development contributes towards achieving this target
- A detailed assessment of the socio-economic impacts of the plant identified the development to have a positive impact by helping the region to achieve strategic targets for renewable energy generation and by lowering the external costs of energy generation
- The provision of employment contributes to one of the key aims of Stockton Borough Council’s Local Plan to increase opportunities for investment and employment
- The development will provide both temporary and permanent employment opportunities for the local community during construction and operation
- The operational phase of the plant will produce a labour demand with moderate levels of skills, the majority of which can be sourced from within the Teesside area
- To minimise the potential leakage effects and maximise the impacts for local residents, Gaia Power is looking to work in co-ordination with Stockton Borough Council to recruit locally
- In addition, the development will generate supply lines which will provide benefits to local businesses throughout the plant’s lifetime
